Spring Garden Update
We are eligible to be the beneficiary of an RBC Community Volunteering Grant in the amount of $1000 for our Spring Garden Party... as long as we provide enough bodies ourselves, to match up with the RBC volunteers who will be attending.
So, if you are planning on coming, please send me an e-mail to confirm, and I'll see you at 10am on Saturday May 31st... in your grubbies. I have ordered tub mulch and we will be mulching the trees in the arboretum as well that day.

Summer Garden Maintenance
We’re putting together our summer garden maintenance team. Volunteers mind our garden for one week each during the summer. This typically means watering once, subject to weather conditions.
Community service hours are available for students who participate in summer maintenance.
Send me an e-mail (to [email protected]) indicating which week(s) you would be available to assist. I’ll get back to you when we have a tentative schedule put together.

Journalism in Action: Working Towards Sustainability
The ESA Library is pleased to welcome ESA Grad Felicity Feinman to the Library, at lunch, this Tuesday, April 29th.
Felicity has recently graduated from the Bachelor of Journalism Studies programme at Carleton University.
At the end of next week Felicity is heading to Tanzania on an Internship run through Carleton University’s Centre for Media in Transitional Societies. The centre was founded by Allan Thompson, who has extensively studied the impact of the media in the Rwandan genocide.
Felicity has taken classes with Allan, most especially enjoying a class on journalism and conflict which she took in her final semester at Carleton.
While in Tanzania, Felicity will be doing radio and TV work for Farm Radio.
Felicity is very excited about this placement, because it's an opportunity to learn about life in a developing country, while working with an incredible organization... in her field of study, communications.
Join us in the Library, at lunch on Tuesday, April 29th. Meet Felicity, learn more about her programme of study and experiences so far. Learn more about Farm Radio.
Plan to come back again - after Felicity has completed her internship - to find out how things went and learn what insights Felicity gained through her experience.

Nature Guardians: Youth Council
Celebrate Earth Day - and Earth Week - with the Ontario Nature Youth Council. Join them this Sunday, April 27th at Humber Bay Park East (at the foot of Park Lawn Ave) from 9am-12pm.
This event is one of 10 volunteer-run and conservation-based initiatives across Ontario organized by members of the Youth Council for Ontario Nature, a province-wide environmental charity. Our own Caroline B. is part of the council. Here is what she has to say about this event:
"The shoreline clean-up and birding hike are a great opportunity for ESA students to promote a cleaner waterfront, learn about the impacts of litter on the environment, and earn community service hours. To find out more about this initiative, visit this link: http://www.ontarionature.org/connect/nature_guardians/our_special_spaces.php"

SESAT Fall Fair: Success!
Just a quick update. We had a good day at the SESAT Fall Fair today. Steady all day long.
We cleared almost $500… which covers approx 40% of the cost of ordering in the new ESA Corn mugs. At this rate we'll be on the road to profit in no time.
Don't forget to see me to pick up your own personal ESA Cornmug… and tell your friends!
Watch for notices as we get rolling with Tape Your Teacher to the wall. Note the date has been changed to Dec 9th, to accommodate scheduling issues within the school.
Also… we do need volunteers to staff SEEDS Me to We sales tables for each night of Festive (Wed dec 4th to Fri Dec 6th). If you're coming to Festive one of those nights, sign up to look after the table. We sell before the show and during intermission… no need to miss anything.
Have a great rest of the weekend.

Great Soup: Thank You
A great big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of Great Soup today. I think it may have been our best one yet.
It was lovely to have some parents contributing and to see a number of parents out to eat with us. Please do join us again next time round.
We raised almost $500 today. It was suggested, by Sauvanne, that since we have not yet chosen a charity for the year, we might want to consider donating these funds to relief efforts in the Philippines.
I propose to make this the first item of business on our new Facebook group: ESA SEEDS Me to We.
I'm going to send you all an invite to join the group. One of the group admin's will accept your reply.
Once one the group, response to my posting about Philippines relief…
Next up: Tape Your Teacher to the Wall. We need to have a short organizer meeting - Christine!!! - and then we'll need to get together with everyone who has offered to assist. Stay tuned.

November 5th: Meeting Follow Up
The minutes from yesterday's meeting are available. Please refer to the document below.
Weekly Update: November 1st
SEEDS Me to We Meeting: Tuesday November 5th at lunch in the back of the Library.
I know that this time and date conflicts for some on Student Council, but with no Grade 9's in the building on Wednesday (TOKW Day), Tuesday is the only possibility.
Items for the agenda include:
Great Soup: Monday November 11th
The buzz is already out there. People are starting to ask when Great Soup is coming. I'm undecided as to whether or not we need to sell tickets ahead of time. Normally we don't, but it's been a year and a half since we've had one, so none of the Grade 9's or 10's - half the school population - know what it is all about.
Thanks to those of you who have already filled out the Google Form advising what you are planning on brining. We have no need of any more dessert items, but we do need more soups and/or stews, as well as salads.
If you have not already signed up with what you are going to be bringing, go to the Google Form to let us know.
Almost everyone has indicated that they are prepared to share their recipe. I have created a Pinterest board (which will remain secret until after the event) to which you may post your recipes.
Everyone who has signed up on the Google Form will each receive an invitation to post to this board. You will need to create a Pinterest account to be able to post. Take, or find, a photo of what you're making, and post it along with the recipe.
An interesting example of how someone posted a recipe can be found here. Basically they prettied up a word processing file and then posted it to Pinterest. (You will need to export your file to a .png or .jpg format to go this route. You could also post a photo and simply upload the recipe ingredients and instructions). If you need any assistance, drop by and see me in the Library.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, if not before.

Friday Morning Classroom Recylcing
Hello all. We have been asked to help out with Friday morning recycling at the school.
The plan would be that teachers would get the recycling from the classrooms outside their door by 8:30am. A team of students would go round between 8:30am and 8:40am to move the bags of recycling to the toters in the stairwells and/or hallway junctions.
I think we could manage this fine if we had 4 teams of approx 3 -4 students each Friday of the month. Each team would be responsible for one Friday each month (first Friday, second Friday, etc.) If there is a month with an extra Friday, we'll figure out a plan at that time.
A number of you indicated earlier in the year that you were interested in helping with recycling at the school. Whether you indicated interest earlier or not, please fill out the Google Form to sign up to help with Friday morning recycling. The form allows you to indicate if you would like to work together with anyone in particular (i.e. maybe you and three friends will work together on any given Friday).
I will send out a schedule sometime mid-week. Watch your e-mail.

Weekly Update: October 24th
First… Thanks to all who came out to make posters and write announcements for Hallowe'en, the Food Drive and the Dumpster Dive. Great job on all counts.
Second… Nobody showed up to do a flyer drop in the neighbourhood. Are we still going out on Hallowe'en night? We need to do a flyer drop so people know in advance that we will be coming for food donations and have them ready. If you are planning on going out, please e-mail me directly to confirm… and plan to help with a flyer drop after school on Monday next week.
Third… We had a great day at the U of T on Tuesday, and have lots of ideas to share with the group. While we were there we made an executive decision to order in CornMugs again (we did them as a fundraiser 5 years ago and they were a huge success). You can learn more about them at CornMug.com. I am also attaching a copy of the mock up for our corn mugs (they're the image on our current Facebook page if you look there for a real life view). I have been in touch with our previous supplier, the artwork has been approved and production has started. They should be here in time for the SESAT Fall Fair on Nov. 23rd. Fingers crossed.
Fourth… Things are in play for our Dumpster Dive next Friday at lunch. I attached the roster of duties for the week to the e-mail sent out. Please refer to it. Note that there is no "lunch hour" on Tuesday on account of Grade 8 day.
Fifth… Remember to sign up to cook for Great Soup. We have lots of baking and sweets stuff. We still need more soups and/or stews. Fill out the Google Form.

Friday October 4th: Meeting Follow Up
The meeting notes from Friday are now available. Please refer to the document posted below. Please also refer to your e-mail for a copy of the notes.
There is a lot to digest from our first meeting. We have a number of events on the go between now and the Christmas Break.
Great Soup is pretty much a command performance. Everyone in the group is encouraged (expected?!) to cook or bake for Great Soup. Please be sure to fill out the Google Form to advise as to what you will be bringing.
Everyone is encouraged to sign up for one or two of our other events. Please be sure not to sign yourself up for too many events. We don't want you to find yourself overwhelmed and overextended.

Meeting: Friday October 4th
Our first face to face full meeting will take place on Friday October 4th. We will be using the space at the back of the Library. Please arrive promptly so as not to disturb the Mental Health Awareness Sympsosium meeting taking place at the front of the Libary.
Friday September 6th Meeting Follow Up
Thank you to everyone who came out to our brief information and organisational meeting on Friday September 6th. We hope you made it out to the welcome back BBQ after our little meeting... and had a great time.
Further to the meeting, please complete the SEEDS Me to We Members Google Form.
You do not need to have been at the meeting to complete the form, or join the group. We know that ESA is a crazy busy place and there are many competing interests on your time.
Most of our organising will be done electronically, although we will occasionally hold lunchtime (or other) meetings on an as needs be basis. To help determine the best time for us to get together on such occasions, you will be sent a link to an online Doodle Poll so that we may get a sense of what will work best for the majority of group members. Please complete this poll as soon as possible.
Glad to have you on board. Looking forward to working with you this year.
Cheers
Ms. Wray
